England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (in the United Kingdom) are examples of entities that are not sovereign states, but which are commonly regarded and referred to as countries. Historically, the countries of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were others. Former states such as Bavaria (now part of Germany) and Piedmont (now part of Italy) would not normally be referred to as "countries" in contemporary English.
The degree of autonomy of non-sovereign countries varies widely. Some are possessions of sovereign states, as several states have overseas dependencies (such as the British Virgin Islands (GBR) and Saint Pierre and Miquelon (FRA)), with citizenry at times identical and at times distinct from their own. Such dependent territories are sometimes listed together with sovereign states on lists of countries, and may be treated as a "country of origin" in international trade, as Hong Kong is.
In English the word has increasingly become associated with political divisions, so that one sense, associated with the indefinite article – "a country" – is now a synonym for state, or a former sovereign state, in the sense of sovereign territory. Areas much smaller than a political state may be called by names such as the West Country in England, the Black Country (a heavily industrialized part of England), "Constable Country" (a part of East Anglia painted by John Constable), the "big country" (used in various contexts of the American West), "coal country" (used of parts of the US and elsewhere) and many other terms.
The equivalent terms in French and Romance languages (''pays'' and variants) have not carried the process of being identified with political sovereign states as far as the English "country", and in many European countries the words are used for sub-divisions of the national territory, as in the German Länder, as well as a less formal term for a sovereign state. France has very many "pays" that are officially recognised at some level, and are either natural regions, like the Pays de Bray, or reflect old political or economic unities, like the Pays de la Loire. At the same time Wales, the United States, and Brazil are also "pays" in everyday French speech.
A version of "country" can be found in the modern French language as ''contrée'', based on the word ''cuntrée'' in Old French, that is used similarly to the word "pays" to define regions and unities, but can also be used to describe a political state in some particular cases. The modern Italian ''contrada'' is a word with its meaning varying locally, but usually meaning a ward or similar small division of a town, or a village or hamlet in the countryside.

Trent Tomlinson (born July 3, 1975) is an American country music artist. After several failed attempts at finding a record deal, Tomlinson was signed to Lyric Street Records in 2005, with his debut album ''Country Is My Rock'', released in early 2006. This album produced three Top 40 singles on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot Country Songs charts: "Drunker Than Me" at #19, "One Wing in the Fire" at #11, and "Just Might Have Her Radio On" at #21. Three further singles were released in 2009.
In his junior year of high school, Tomlinson reached the finals for "You Can Be a Star", a television talent show on The Nashville Network (now Spike TV), in which Trent placed second. After numerous deals cut short due to labels that went bankrupt or were being taken over, Tomlinson landed a songwriting deal with Cal IV Entertainment. Some of his songs were recorded by Emerson Drive and Blue County on their respective debut albums. He also cut some sides for Lyric Street Records, with whom he later signed a record deal. Tomlinson's debut single, "Drunker Than Me", was released in late 2005, followed by his album ''Country Is My Rock''. Two additional singles were also released from the album: "One Wing in the Fire" and "Just Might Have Her Radio On", the former is a song about Tomlinson's father. Tomlinson also co-wrote the track "Missing Missouri" on Sara Evans' 2005 album ''Real Fine Place'', and "Why Can't I Leave Her Alone" on George Strait's 2006 album ''It Just Comes Natural''.
On December 15, 2008 it was announced that Tomlinson would be the second artist signed to Lyric Street's subsidiary label, Carolwood Records. His fourth single, "That's How It Still Oughta Be," from his upcoming album ''A Guy Like Me'' (due sometime in 2010), made its chart debut in January 2009. That song fell from the charts in May 2009 and was replaced by "Henry Cartwright's Produce Stand". (Henry Cartwright's Back-Home Home-Grown Prayer & Produce Stand became his first single to miss the Top 40 of the country chart, where it reached number 44.) A third single, "Angels Like Her", was released on October 26, 2009, shortly before the closure of Carolwood. Tomlinson subsequently returned to Lyric Street before parting ways in March 2010.

William Joel "Bucky" Covington III (born November 8, 1977) is an American country music singer. He placed eighth on the 5th season of the Fox Network's talent competition series ''American Idol''. In December 2006, he signed a recording contract with Lyric Street Records. His self-titled debut album, produced by Mark Miller of the band Sawyer Brown, was released on April 17, 2007. The album debuted at #1 on the ''Billboard'' Top Country Albums chart, and produced three hit singles on the Hot Country Songs charts: "A Different World" at #6, "It's Good to Be Us" at #11, and "I'll Walk" at #10. Three more singles: "I Want My Life Back," "Gotta Be Somebody" and "A Father's Love (The Only Way He Knew How)," were released for an unreleased second album, titled ''I'm Alright''.
At the age of 18, Covington taught himself how to play the guitar and began performing at clubs. He is also a bassist, drummer and songwriter. Over the years, Covington has expanded his talents, both country and rock. After some time, he elected to perform both original and cover material in a cross-genre vein. Rocky is also a musician and is the former lead singer of the North Carolina band ''Swamp Cat''.
In 1998 when the Covington twins were 20 years old, they were in a minor automobile mishap. Bucky allegedly pretended to be Rocky. They were arrested for confusing the authorities. The plaintiff failed to identify which twin was driving, since the twins were identical.
After ''Idol'', Bucky bought a house in Franklin, Tennessee, near Nashville, which he shared with Rocky and his wife Terra. Rocky also joined Bucky's band as a drummer. On February 13, 2007, he and his wife Crystal separated after more than seven years of marriage. Bucky recently got engaged to his girlfriend of 3.5 years, Katherine Cook.

Covington negotiated with Buena Vista Music Group's country label, Lyric Street Records. His debut single, "A Different World," was released to country radio on January 16, 2007, coinciding with the premiere of American Idol (season 6). Its initial debut on radio was on Sirius Satellite Radio's ''New Country'' channel in late December 2006.
His debut album, ''Bucky Covington'', was released on April 17, 2007, to positive reviews. It debuted on the Billboard 200 at #4 selling 61,000 copies. It also debuted at #1 on the Top Country Albums chart, making the album the best opening week for a debut album by a male on the chart since Billy Ray Cyrus' 1992 debut with ''Some Gave All''. Covington's debut surpassed the previous record held by Jason Michael Carroll's ''Waitin' in the Country''. He performed selections from his album during a nationwide tour in 2007, and the track "Empty Handed" appeared in NASCAR 08 as part of the in-game soundtrack. Overall, ''Bucky Covington'' accounted for three singles. "A Different World" peaked at #6, followed by "It's Good to Be Us" at #11 and "I'll Walk" at #10.
In April 2010, it was announced Lyric Street Records would be closing, but Covington would be transferred to another label owned by Disney Music Group. According to his MySpace, Covington remains unsigned after Lyric Street Records closed.
